How it all began...

Southern Cross Lubes (SCL) was established in 2007 by two directors, Anthony Van Brugel and Ray Blayney, who at the time were owners of a fuels marketing distributor in Gippsland, GPG- a reseller of Mobil lubricants. SCL was appointed authorised distributor in Victoria and Tasmania at this time by Exxon Mobil, to distribute Mobil lubricants to the fuels marketing distributors and manage these existing relationships.

These humble beginnings saw the business  trading out of a single office of a distribution warehouse in Sunshine and the entire SCL team was made up of the two directors, a General Manager, an account manager (Craige Milward- 2007 – present) and an administration assistant.

In late 2007, ExxonMobil made the decision to move to a full distributor model within Australia and went through a referral process whereby all direct customers were referred to the authorised distributors in each state. This saw significant growth in the SCL business in just a few short months since its inception. This referral process was carried out in stages and the first accounts to be transferred to SCL were the independent workshops, followed by franchise car dealers and then industrial customers.

In July 2011 the most significant event took place in SCL’s history to date. The business changed hands from the 2 original directors and was bought outright by a New Zealand family company, the HWR group. Following the take over, SCL moved to a larger office in Port Melbourne in October of the same year.

November 2014 saw another move for SCL to its current location in Ajax Road, Altona. The site was already home to SCL’s warehouse as well as our sister company, Petrogas.

Most recently, SCL has been appointed the authorised distributor of Mobil lubricants in NSW- in addition to the existing Victoria and Tasmania area. With this announcement, also comes the success of being named the distributor for the Global Marine supply contract, servicing the marine ports across the eastern seaboard. We currently have 18 staff with numbers expected to increase in the short term and we are investing in a bulk tank facility on site at Ajax Road in early 2016.
